작가소개 : 형태없는세계를 향한 시선
저는 형태가 없는 세계를 향해 시선을 돌려왔습니다.
감정, 기억, 신념과 같은 무형의 것들은 눈에 보이지 않지만, 인간의 삶을 결정짓는 근원적인 힘이라고 생각합니다.
그러나 그것들은 종종 말로 설명되지 않고, 형태를 가지지 않기에 사회 속에서 배제되거나 억눌리곤 합니다.
저는 바로 언어로 담기지 못한 감정의 잔흔을 붙잡고 시각 언어로 전환하는 작업을 이어가고 있습니다.
2018년, 티베트에서의 경험은 제 시선을 완전히 바꾸어 놓았습니다.
한 사람이 자신의 전 존재를 다해 ‘무언가’를 향해 기도하는 장면을 마주했을 때,
저는 보이지 않는 것에 대한 절대적인 신념이 한 인간의 태도로 드러날 수 있음을 처음으로 체감했습니다.
그 경험은 제게 내면이라는 비가시적 세계의 힘과,
그것을 예술로 붙잡아내야 할 이유를 선명하게 각인시켜주었습니다.
이후 저는 ‘무명(無名)’이라는 상징적 존재를 통해, 인간 내면의 감정과 그것의 구조를 탐구하는
작업을 이어가고 있습니다. 무명은 감정을 갖지 못한 존재로, 스스로의 결핍을 채우기 위해 인간에게
감정을 부여합니다. 그는 처음엔 관찰자에 머물렀지만, 점차 억압된 감정을 해방하고 새로운 감정 질서를
만들기 위한 중재자로 변화합니다. 그 여정은 곧 저의 작업 흐름과도 맞닿아 있습니다.
제 작업은 감정을 단순히 표현하는 데 그치지 않습니다.
감정이 어떻게 생성되고, 억압되고, 문명 속에서 확산되는지를 추적하고, 그것을 시각적으로 구
성해내는 데 집중합니다. 현대 사회가 감정을 비효율적인 것으로 치부하며
내면을 메마르게 만드는 시대에, 저는 오히려 그 억눌린 감정들의 균열 속에서
새로운 감정의 언어와 세계관을 재구성하고자 합니다. ‘형태 없는 세계’는
지금도 계속 움직이고 있습니다. 그리고 저는, 그 세계를 끝까지 붙잡아보려는 시도로서 작업을 이어가고 있습니다.
저는 무엇이든 곧장 정의 내리기보다, 그 이면에 숨은 감정과 맥락을 오래 들여다보는 사람입니다.
지속적으로 질문하고, 때로는 불확실한 상태를 견디며, 쉽게 보여지지 않는 것을 끝까지 추적하려는 태도는
제 삶과 작업 모두에 깊이 스며들어 있습니다. 무명을 통해 구축해온 세계관은
결국, 제가 살아오며 겪은 감정의 모순과 결핍을 스스로 사유하고 화해하려는 과정이기도 합니다.
I have always looked toward a world without shape.
I think emotions, memories, and beliefs are invisible,
but they have a strong power in human life.
Because they have no shape and are hard to explain with words,
society often ignores or hides them.
So I try to catch the traces of these emotions
and change them into a visual language through my work.
In 2018, one experience in Tibet changed the way I see the world.
I saw a person praying with all of their heart and body to “something.”
At that moment, I felt how strong invisible belief can be
and how it can be shown in a person’s attitude.
This made me understand the power of the inner world,
even though we cannot see it.
And I knew I had to express it through art.
After that, I started working with a symbolic figure called Muumyung (無名),
to explore human emotions and how they are built inside.
Muumyung is a being who has no emotions.
To fill his emptiness, he gave emotions to humans.
At first, he only watched human emotions like an observer.
But later, he started to help release blocked feelings
and build a new order of emotions.
This journey is very similar to the way I work as an artist.
My work is not just about showing emotions.
I try to understand how emotions are made,
how they are hidden or controlled,
and how they move through our world and culture.
Today, many people think emotions are not useful.
They think emotions make us weak or slow.
But I believe that the cracks and breaks made by blocked emotions
can lead us to a new way of feeling and thinking.
This “shapeless world” is still moving.
And I continue working,
trying to follow and catch that movement through my art.
I do not try to explain or name everything quickly.
Instead, I look deeply into the emotions and meanings behind them.
I ask many questions and stay in uncertain feelings for a long time.
This way of thinking is in both my life and my art.
The world of Muumyung is also my way of understanding
my own emotional pain and emptiness,
and trying to make peace with it through art.
